Installing and Configuring Wordpress on Windows 2000

To install the Wordpress blogging software on a Windows 2000 system you need to do the following steps:

  • Download and install MySql
  • Download PHP and extract the archive to a temporary directory.
  • You will need to modify the IIS configuration to recognize PHP pages.
    1. Create an ISAPI filter. Call it PHP and point it to C:\Program Files\PHP\php5isapi.dll. This file name varies from release to release of PHP.
    2. On the ‘Documents’ tab create a new default document called index.php. This isn’t so much a PHP requirement as it is a requirement for Wordpress.
  • Create a MySql database to hold the blog. This consists of the following steps:
    1. Start the MySql client
      C:\Program Files\MySql\MySql Server 5.0\bin\mysql -u root -p
    2. When prompted enter the root password that you configured when you installed MySql
    3. Create the database
      create database <database_name>;
    4. Grant access to a user id that WordPress will use to access the blog. This can (and probably should) be a new user id (not root).
      grant all privileges to <database_name>.* to “<blog_user>” identified by “<blog_password>”;
  • In the directory where you put the PHP files, rename wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php.
  • Edit wp-config.php and modify the ‘DB_*’ variables to reflect the values for the database that you just created.
  • Copy the directory with the Wordpress files to the place where you want your web site to be able to find it, usually c:\inetpub\wwwroot.
  • Create a virtual directory for the Wordpress directory with read and read script permissions.
  • You should now be able to access the new blog from your web browser by the following URL:
    http://<your_web_host>/<your_virtual_directory> e.g. http://localhost/blog
  • The first thing that you will see is a page telling you that you have not installed Wordpress yet. Just click the install link and follow the prompts. When it tells you about the admin password be sure to WRITE IT DOWN.
  • Click the login link and login in toWordpress using the admin password given in the previous step. You will probably want to change that password to something more personal before you do anything else.
  • You should now be ready to start authoring your blog. Enjoy!!
